What is an air tightness test?

A test when it comes to air pressurisation is generally carried out through the setting up of a fan in the main entranceway of the dwelling. All flues and chimneys are sealed off in the residence before it is established how much air flow is needed to sustain a rate of 50 pascals (Pa) excess air pressure.

BS EN 13929 is the standard by which pressurisation tests like this are performed. The measurement of air permeability in tests of these kinds is in cubic metres per hour per square metre of envelope area at 50 pascals (m3/(h.m2) at 50 Pa). The envelope is the measured area, that area that contains the internal volume of the building – the floors, walls and ceilings. External wind speed, temperature and humidity are three of the measurements taken on carefully calibrated instruments, which are calibrated annually thereafter. Bespoke software is used to analyse the information and report on the measurements. If you want a quote or advice, either fill in our online form or phone us on 07850 410 957. Air Tech Solutions

Air Tech Solutions was set up to provide the necessary air tightness testing and reporting as covered under part L1a of Building Regulations (2006 edition). These reports can then be given to house builders, for whom compliance is mandatory. The partners of this service are experienced at both management and in the practical aspects of construction, and they aim to provide an efficient and cost effective facility for the construction industry.

The British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing (BINDT) administrates the third party approved scheme through which Air Tech Solutions carries out its work in the air tightness of housing. Technical expertise and management are given by the air pressure testing and Measurement Association (ATTMC), which in turn reports to the Council of the Institute. 1st January 2012.
